As of August, AT&T had 18.7 million prepaid customers, including 12.4 million Cricket subscribers. Cricket Wireless is a smaller carrier that is owned by AT&T and operates on their network. The prepaid market is about to change dramatically if Verizon can close its pending $6.9 billion takeover of Tracfone and add those 21 million subscribers to its ranks. As the competition heats up, the industry is looking for more growth in riskier areas like low-credit customers who have to pay for service in advance.
